We walked along the rocky beach with our heads down, searching the sand. I had been on so many beaches in my lifetime, but had never thought to seek out the smooth, pale gems that probably exist on every mile of sand if you care to look. I was kicking myself for not collecting them sooner, imagining the wonderful pile of pale blue and green that I could have amassed in my short lifetime. How I would have put it in jars lining our windowsill to catch the morning sun, as a reminder of the ocean.
