It was hot. Way too hot. I never understood why, being born in the middle of summer, I still could never stand the heat. Although I do have an intense love for county fairs and summer harvest festivals, so I guess that's part of my summer-baby heritage. For my 27th birthday we had decided to brave the 2-hour journey up past Sacramento to Marysville, because they were having a peach festival that day. Although the quaintness I had pictured in my mind immediately dissolved when we stepped out of the car onto the hot concrete. Shielding our eyes from the sun (I forgot a hat, why do I always forget to bring a hat?), we peered around at the booths selling knock-off 'made in China' toys, deep-fried fair food (but not peaches), and snow cones. It was, essentially, a run-down fair in a mostly boarded-up downtown.
We did find some peaches (though not as many as I expected - where's my peach pie, peach ice cream, peach pizza?!), and the few stores that were left were mostly antique, which I kind of love, so we had a pretty good time overall despite the heat. These toilet pins caught my eye and, being the sap that I am, I decided I had to get a souvenir of our trip and that this would be the perfect thing. I had never seen anything like them: a perfect cube with pins poked through in a perfect grid, the colors mixed to remind you of midway lights or a light bright.
